Migration in northern Mali: Conflict sensitivity analysis and protection needs assessment

The Gao region in northern Mali, including the city of Gao itself, has in recent years grown into a key transit hub for the transport of migrants heading to Algeria and, to a lesser extent, Niger. What was already a challenging protection context for people on the move has steadily worsened as a result of (a) a complex political and security crisis, with numerous fallouts and (b) the political and economic fallout of externally-driven attempts to manage migration flows – specifically European Union’s (EU) migration management policies as applied to this region.
